The terms “functional food” and/or “functional ingredient” are relatively new yet they are gaining traction. As with the term “natural,” there is still no universally accepted definition of the term functional although the following provides a good working understanding of how the term is typically used in relation to foods.
Whichever definition of functional food or functional ingredient you choose to follow, the ingredients in Raw Power SuperFood Mix comply. In fact, the entire company is based on the belief that nutrition is a vital component of a long, healthy, happy, and productive life. Definition of Functional Foods
A brief definition is – “Any food intentionally designed to lower the risk of, or delay the onset of, certain diseases, or otherwise provide a health benefit as a result of either adding or removing certain substances from that food.”
A more thorough / comprehensive definition is – Functional foods are food products formulated with naturally occurring substances that are found in various fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, and/or spices, with the intention of providing a health benefit (such as lowering the risk of certain diseases or to positively affect a particular bodily process).
They go beyond merely correcting diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. Their formulation is intended to provide a health benefit, to lower the risk of specific diseases (by either removing certain ingredients that may be harmful or by adding or combining ingredients (beneficial ones) that are not normally found in that particular food product, or by concentrating various beneficial substances in higher than usual quantities).
